Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about orthotics: the facts, the myths, and what to realistically expect. If your question isn't here, ask us directly.

The Basics

Insoles are generic cushioning products available in pharmacies or shoe stores. Orthotics are clinically prescribed medical devices designed to correct a specific biomechanical dysfunction. The term "insole" is to orthotics what a plaster is to surgery: both go near the foot, but they serve completely different functions. At UNIKFEET, we produce custom orthotics: fabricated specifically for your foot, following a medical assessment by Dr. Brackenbury.

Orthotics can address a wide range of conditions, including:

  • • Flat feet (pes planus) in children and adults
  • • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • • Knee pain caused by foot misalignment
  • • Lower back pain with a biomechanical foot cause
  • • Shin splints, IT band syndrome (in athletes)
  • • Bunions (cannot correct, but can slow progression)
  • • Metatarsalgia (pain in the ball of the foot)
  • • Gait abnormalities in children
  • • Balance issues in elderly patients
  • • General fatigue and discomfort from daily wear

No. You can book a free assessment directly with us: no referral required. If, during the assessment, Dr. Brackenbury determines that additional medical investigation is needed (imaging, blood tests, etc.), he will refer you to the appropriate partner clinic. Many patients do come to us with referrals from physiotherapists and orthopaedic specialists in our network.

There is no catch. We offer free assessments because we believe in informed decisions: if orthotics aren't the right solution for you, we'll tell you so. We would rather have an honest relationship with patients than make a sale that isn't right. If orthotics are appropriate, we'll provide a full recommendation with no pressure to proceed immediately.

Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf

This is the most common experience we hear: and it's very understandable. Pharmacy insoles add uniform cushioning to an "average" foot shape. They don't address your specific arch geometry, pressure distribution, or biomechanical dysfunction. Custom orthotics are prescription devices: equivalent to the difference between reading glasses you pick up at a pharmacy vs. prescription glasses made by an optometrist. Same concept, completely different level of precision and effectiveness.

UNIKFEET orthotics are fabricated from medical-grade materials designed for durability. With normal daily use, they typically last 2-5 years. Athletes may need replacement more frequently (1-3 years) due to higher mechanical stress. Children's orthotics need to be reassessed and often replaced as their feet grow: we build this into our follow-up protocol.

Most UNIKFEET orthotics are designed to transfer between standard closed-toe shoes with ease. When you come for your fitting, please bring the shoes you wear most frequently: we design the orthotic profile with your specific footwear in mind. For very narrow shoes (dress shoes, heels), we can produce a slimmer-profile variant. Open sandals and flip-flops are generally incompatible with orthotics.

Children & Families

Your paediatrician is partially right: many children do develop a normal arch by age 6-8. However, not all do, and there is significant individual variation. The key question is: are your child's flat feet causing symptoms? Pain, fatigue, avoidance of sport, or unusual gait patterns are signs that intervention is worth discussing. An assessment with Dr. Brackenbury will give you a clear, evidence-based answer for your specific child: not a generalisation.

Generally from around age 3-4, when the foot structure has developed enough to accommodate an orthotic. The precise starting age depends on the condition, foot size, and clinical assessment. We recommend early consultation if you're concerned: even if the decision is "wait and monitor", it's better to have that professional guidance than to wait and miss the optimal intervention window.

The Process

The initial free assessment takes 30 minutes. If orthotics are recommended and you decide to proceed, the 3D scanning and clinical prescription take approximately 45-60 minutes in a single session. Your orthotics are then fabricated and ready for fitting within 3-5 business days. The fitting appointment takes about 30 minutes. Total time from first contact to wearing your orthotics: typically under 2 weeks.

A brief adaptation period is normal: usually 1-2 weeks. Your musculoskeletal system is adjusting to a new alignment pattern, which may cause mild muscle soreness. This is entirely normal. We provide a structured break-in schedule: start with 2-3 hours per day, gradually increasing. If you experience sharp pain, stop use and contact us immediately. Our 4-week follow-up appointment is specifically designed to address any adaptation issues.

It depends on the condition. For structural issues like flat feet or rigid deformities, lifelong use is often recommended: not because orthotics are addictive, but because the underlying anatomy doesn't change. For functional issues (posture problems, temporary sports injuries), a defined treatment period with exercise-based rehabilitation may reduce reliance on orthotics over time. Dr. Brackenbury will give you an honest prognosis at your assessment.

Myths & Misconceptions

FALSE. This is the most persistent myth in foot care. Well-designed custom orthotics do not weaken muscles: they correct alignment and reduce abnormal mechanical stress, allowing the muscles to function more efficiently. At UNIKFEET, our orthotics are often combined with specific strengthening exercises to maximise results. We sometimes reduce orthotic use gradually as patients build foot strength: but this is always clinically guided.

FALSE. Many elite athletes, active young adults, and children use orthotics preventatively: before problems develop. They are precision tools for anyone who wants their body to work better. Think of it like dental hygiene: you don't wait for serious disease to start taking care of your teeth. The same logic applies to your feet: the foundation of your entire musculoskeletal system.

FALSE. The comparison is fundamentally incorrect: it would be like saying "a tailored suit is just an expensive version of a ready-to-wear suit." The fabrication process, materials, clinical prescription, follow-up care, and expected outcomes are categorically different. A UNIKFEET orthotic is a medical device with a 2-5 year lifespan, fabricated to millimetric precision, prescribed by a licensed physician, and adjusted as needed over its lifetime. Its cost per day of use is typically far lower than the repeated purchase of ineffective insoles.
