Knowledge & clarity
Everything you want to know about custom-made insoles: the facts, the myths, and what to realistically expect. If your question isn't here, ask us directly.
Insoles are generic cushioning products available in pharmacies or shoe stores. Custom-made insoles are crafted around your specific foot shape and how you walk and stand — not a one-size-fits-all cushion. At UNIKFEET, we produce custom-made insoles: made specifically for your foot, following a full foot analysis guided by Dr. Brackenbury's expertise.
Custom-made insoles can add comfort and support for a range of everyday foot needs, including:
UNIKFEET insoles are designed for comfort and fit and are not medical devices. For personal health advice, please consult a licensed professional.
No. You can book a free foot analysis directly with us: no referral required. If, during the analysis, our team feels you may benefit from additional professional advice, we will point you to an appropriate partner centre. Many clients do come to us recommended by other professionals in our network.
There is no catch. We offer free foot analyses because we believe in informed decisions: if custom-made insoles aren't the right solution for you, we'll tell you so. We would rather have an honest relationship with clients than make a sale that isn't right. If custom-made insoles are a good fit, we'll provide a full recommendation with no pressure to proceed immediately.
This is the most common experience we hear: and it's very understandable. Pharmacy insoles add uniform cushioning to an "average" foot shape. They don't account for your specific arch shape, pressure distribution, or the way you walk and stand. Custom-made insoles are precision-made for you: equivalent to the difference between reading glasses you pick up at a pharmacy vs. custom lenses made by an optometrist. Same concept, completely different level of precision and fit.
UNIKFEET custom-made insoles are made from premium, durable materials designed to last. With normal daily use, they typically last 2-5 years. Athletes may need replacement more frequently (1-3 years) due to higher mechanical stress. Children's insoles need to be re-checked and often replaced as their feet grow: we build this into our follow-up protocol.
Most UNIKFEET insoles are designed to transfer between standard closed-toe shoes with ease. When you come for your fitting, please bring the shoes you wear most frequently: we design the insole profile with your specific footwear in mind. For very narrow shoes (dress shoes, heels), we can produce a slimmer-profile variant. Open sandals and flip-flops are generally incompatible with custom-made insoles.
That advice is partially right: many children do develop a normal arch by age 6-8. However, not all do, and there is significant individual variation. The key question is: are your child's flat arches affecting their comfort? Discomfort, fatigue, avoidance of sport, or unusual gait patterns are signs that it's worth talking to us. A foot analysis with Dr. Brackenbury will give you a clear, evidence-based answer for your specific child: not a generalisation.
Generally from around age 3-4, when the foot structure has developed enough to accommodate an insole. The precise starting age depends on your child's needs, foot size, and foot analysis. We recommend an early chat if you're concerned: even if the decision is "wait and monitor", it's better to have that professional guidance than to wait and miss the optimal window.
The free foot analysis takes 15 to 30 minutes. If custom-made insoles are recommended and you decide to go ahead, how long they take depends on the production process chosen: Lenz insoles are made immediately, during your visit, while insoles milled from multi-density EVA blocks take 5 days to 2 weeks to produce.
A brief adaptation period is normal: usually 1-2 weeks. Your feet and body are adjusting to a new alignment pattern, which may cause mild muscle tiredness. This is entirely normal. We provide a structured break-in schedule: start with 2-3 hours per day, gradually increasing. If you feel sharp discomfort, stop use and contact us immediately. Our 4-week follow-up appointment is specifically designed to address any adaptation issues.
It depends on your needs. For people with low or flat arches or a rigid foot structure, long-term use is often recommended: not because insoles are addictive, but because the underlying anatomy doesn't change. For everyday or short-term needs (posture habits, a busy sports season), a defined period of exercise-based support may reduce reliance on insoles over time. Our team, guided by Dr. Brackenbury, will give you an honest outlook at your foot analysis.
FALSE. This is the most persistent myth in foot care. Well-designed custom-made insoles do not weaken muscles: they help support better alignment and reduce unusual mechanical stress, allowing the muscles to function more efficiently. At UNIKFEET, our insoles are often combined with specific strengthening exercises to maximise results. We sometimes reduce insole use gradually as clients build foot strength: but this is always guided by professional foot analysis.
FALSE. Many elite athletes, active young adults, and children use custom-made insoles proactively: for everyday comfort and support. They are precision tools for anyone who wants their body to work better. Think of it like dental hygiene: you don't wait for serious trouble to start taking care of your teeth. The same logic applies to your feet: the foundation of how you stand and move.
FALSE. The comparison is fundamentally incorrect: it would be like saying "a tailored suit is just an expensive version of a ready-to-wear suit." The fabrication process, materials, insole design, follow-up care, and expected outcomes are categorically different. A UNIKFEET custom-made insole is a precision-engineered insole with a 2-5 year lifespan, made to millimetric precision, designed following a full foot analysis, and adjusted as needed over its lifetime. Its cost per day of use is typically far lower than the repeated purchase of ineffective insoles.
The best answer is always a personal one. Book a free 15-minute foot analysis and ask Dr. Brackenbury directly: for your specific situation.
